What are people saying about the ASL squad format, league play, and the youth nationals

How the Program Playoffsworks

The playoffs are about community programs having an opportunity to compete against other programs and use the event to build deep strong roundnet communities.

ASL Match Format

Come as a squad, play as a team, win as a program. Each squad must have 7 players. A squad vs squad is called a match. There are 4 rounds in each match. Each round 3 pairs from your squad will face off against 3 pairs from the other squad. Teammates must change who they play with every round and subs are required to come in after they sit off. The team with the most games won after the 4 rounds wins the match. The ASL has software that will help you keep track of subs, help you follow the rules for the format and strategize against the other squad. This all makes for a seamless competitive experience where the two captains are playing chess and roundnet at the same time! A captain with a weaker squad but a stronger pairing strategy can take a match they would not have otherwise won.

It's important to note, that every player must sub once before any player can sub twice during a match. In regards to the playoffs, since there will be mostly 4 rounds per match, no player can sub more than once per match. This also creates a fun coaching strategy to name 3 starters essentially, that won't sub during a match.

The Playoff "Pod" structure vs. traditional tourney structure

The Program Play offs are designed to get everyone the most amount of playing time. The event will be ran using the ASL Pod format. Your squad will be placed in pods of 4-5 teams. You will play everyone in your pod and those with the best records will move up a division and those with the worst records will go down a division. After being moving up or down for several rounds the top 2 squads in the highest division will face off for a finals match. Winner of the Finals takes the Money and the sponsorship deals! Each squad that wins their final pods takes home the title of division winner and win prizes. No more getting out first round of bracket and no more meaningless consolation brackets. You could lose several matches throughout pods and still win the final pot!

Why come

Yes, there is big money and big deal packages. And that is going to advance the sport in cool ways. But this event is going to be a lot of fun! This format is a blast, and being in Vegas for a couple days playing the sport you love just got a lot more exciting. Every community with at least 7 players qualifies for one of the divisions. Host a tryout and start developing the next generation of elite roundnet players.

The purpose of the Program Playoffs is to provide incentive for programs to dig deep into their community. Limiting how many premier players can be on a team and drawing from a certain distance makes for a well balanced and large event.

It gives those who are experienced the motivation to develop others and those on the cusp of greatness a shot at earning big winnings that they normally would not have a chance to earn.

Playoff FAQ

7 is the exact number you need to be eligible to play. If you bring 6, then one person might get hurt. You need at least 6 players per round. If for some reason, you find your squad only has 5 players, you can still play the match, but you would forfeit 1 of 3 games for each round you don't have 6 eligible players.
The intention for the 100 mile boundary for challenger and premier/state boundary for the women, is to create specific programs that battle it out and showcase their development. In the future playoffs, the radius will shrink to closer to 30 miles. There are some allowances for people who live outside the boundary rule. If your squad is the closest group to where they live, and they don't live more than 150 more miles away, than a request can be made by emailing alex@youthspikers.com
A premier player for the Playoffs is defined as anyone who held premier qualification during the 2022 season. This includes those that just gained it or technically lost it in 2022. The only exception to this is those who can prove that they lost their status after attempting to regain it in at least 3 STS events in 2022.
Using this as the format for 2023 does two things. First it gives any squad a strong chance to win big. Second, Roundnet across the country needs more community depth. Incentivizing top players to work with others is what the roundnet scene needs in order to see sustainable growth.
Where a player can play depends on where they've lived the last 12 months. If the player has lived in any location for more than 6 weeks over the last 12 months they can choose to play for either of these programs.  If they just moved to a new location under 6 weeks before the tournament start date, they can play for the new program if they don’t intend to return to live in the previous location for more than 2 plus weeks. Otherwise they will need to live there at 6 weeks. • For example, they graduated and signed a lease or took out a mortgage in the new location. Or maybe their family moved and sold their previous home. Etc.  If a player is challenged by another team, an investigation will be launched, and if the player is found to be in violation of this rule, the entire squad may be ruled ineligible to win any prize at the tournament and may be disqualified from the tournament.
There are several good leads thus far where hotels would cost $140 at most. Stay tuned
